Description: Throat cancer usually refers to cancers that grows in the pharynx or larynx (voice box), but can also refer to cancers that grows in the oesophagus (food pipe) or thyroid. Some cancers which grows in the throat area, as well as the tongue, salivary glands, sinuses, nose or ear, are classified as head and neck cancers.

1. Surgery for early-stage throat cancer.

Throat cancer that is referred to the surface of the throat or the vocal cords may be treated surgically using endoscopy. Your physicain may put a hollow endoscope into your throat or voice box and then move special surgical tools or a laser through the scope. Using these tools, your physician can elimininate in the case of the laser, vaporize very superficial cancers.

2. Surgery to remove all or part of the voice box.

For minor tumors, your physician may remove the part of your voice box that is affected by tumor, leaving as much of the voice box as possible. Your physicain may be able to preserve your capability to speak and breathe normally. For bigger, more-extensive tumors, it may be necessary to eliminate your entire voice box. Your windpipe is then attached to a hole in your throat to allow you to breathe. If your entire larynx is eliminated, you have various options for restoring your speech.

3. Surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes (neck dissection).

If throat cancer has invaded deep within your neck, your physician may recommend surgery to eliminate some or all of the lymph nodes to see if they contain cancer cells. Surgery carries a risk of oozing and infection.

4. Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses medicnies to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is often used including with radiation therapy in treating throat cancers. Certain chemotherapy medicnies make cancer cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. But combining chemotherapy and radiation therapy increases the disadvantages of both treatments.

5. Targeted drug therapy

Targeted medicines treat throat cancer by taking advantage of specific disadvantages in cancer cells that influence the cells growth. Cetuximab (Erbitux) is one choosen therapy approved for treating throat cancer in certain situations. Cetuximab stops the working of a protein that's found in various types of healthy cells, but is more general in certain types of throat cancer cells.
