2. Colectomy

A colectomy is surgery to eliminate all or part of the colon. Nearby lymph nodes are eliminiated as well. If only part of the colon is eliminated, it is called a hemicolectomy or partial colectomy. The physician removes the part of the colon and a small segment of normal colon on either side of the effected tissue. Usually, about one-fourth to one-third of your colon is removed, but this depends on the area and location of the cancer. The remaining sections of your colon are then reconstructed.
